Dr. Stone was developed by TMS Entertainment in July of 2019 airing to the present day. With over three seasons adapted from its Manga origins being published in its animated format by Weekly Shonen Jump. The story follows Ishigami Senku a brilliant young high school student with an aptitude for all things science. After the world crumbles and humans turn to stone after a bright green light surges the planet Senku races to bring all of modern technology back to the primitive stone world he finds himself in. With the help of a variety of characters who wish to aid him in reviving everyone from their stone tombs.
Dr. Stone is one of the outliers in Shonen anime. Many think Shonen is simply big explosions, lots of actions, and fight scenes that go on for multiple episodes at a time, I’m looking at you Dragon Ball… And yet for all that Shonen is this show captures all of that in the most roundabout way. The focal point of the show isn’t fights, those are just means to an end. The focus is the science.
Senku and the writers use this science in a brilliant way to resolve and avoid conflict rather than to power through it with excessive shouting or new powerups being pulled out of nowhere. Not only is the science fun, it’s mostly accurate. The examples and tutorials, while being a little loose here and there, do actually function as intended in the real world. It’s a practical science.
I adore Shonen that do something different. Many people think it’s just action and fight scenes but it can be so much more and Dr. Stone encompasses that in absolute spades. Without spoiling too much I will say towards the later seasons it can become convoluted and strange. But the entertainment factor comes much from the amazing and fun science mixed with the funny and surprisingly comedic effects that Shonen is known for.
However, with its humor, Dr. Stone tends to lean into it a bit more creating just a fun experience all around for many age groups.
I adore this show as it always holds a very special place in my heart. Not only is it an interesting premise it speaks volumes on the unwavering determination and grit that humanity has that separates us from beasts. It focuses on this point perfectly and really makes you want to side with the Kingdom of Science!
