Developed by Studio Wit and Cloverworks, Spy X Family, an action-comedy, Slice of Life, aired in April of 2022 and was adapted from the manga series of the same name developed by Tatsuya Endo. The story follows Twilight, a spy currently serving in a war between the nations Westalis and Ostania. His objective is to infiltrate the school of an Ostanian Official to hopefully end the war. However, to do so Twilight needs to have a kid to enroll.
So, taking on the name Loid Forger he takes in a young girl named Anya who is a curious young girl with the ability to read people’s minds. The story follows their weird and wild antics while also having a wonderful slice-of-life storyline that people can’t help but enjoy.
Spy X Family has a wonderful feel to it. Very rarely in reviews do people talk about the actual feel for the anime. Many focus on the action, the characters, or the animation style. But I can’t help but talk about how childlike this anime makes me feel. It almost feels like old cartoons on a Saturday morning when it’s cold out, and you’re huddled in a blanket with a cup of hot chocolate watching your shows. It feels right in a way. And what I mean by that is, this anime combines the aspects of good animation, amazing storytelling, and relatable dialogue to make you feel a genuine connection to the world.

The visuals are stunning and pretty, showing the effort the artists put into making this world feel alive. The characters’ art has so much expression and personality that you can’t help but genuinely adore them when they interact. Their personalities are so well-defined that when you watch two or more people clash, you both know what to expect while still being surprised by the oddities that come about in the conversation.

For instance, I love how Loid actually behaves like a real father without realizing it. One of my favorite scenes shows Loid and Anya in a seamstress shop to get Anya’s school clothes. Many would think I’d talk about the main character meeting the love interest, but I want to focus on what Anya says when the seamstress takes her to get her measurements. Anya, rather casually I might add, yells out “I’m being sold off somewhere.” While the seamstress takes her to the measuring section of the shop. Loid casually counters in a sarcastic way that only a father could in that moment saying: “You won’t if you behave.”
Scenes like these show the charm of Spy X Family and I absolutely adore this show for it. The action scenes are extremely well done and the tactics and such that are used to surprise the audience are great. But the sheer stupidity in some scenes leaves a bigger impression than any high-octane fight scene. The music paired with some of these scenes is so fitting with light jazz reminiscing of the 40’s to 60’s era of music. These work well with the action but help you relax nicely in the scenes where the characters just talk. This anime in one word can be explained as Comfy. And That’s all it needs to be. A comfy Spy-Thriller.
