Ergo Proxy: The Sci-Fi Noir Classic That Stands the Test of Time

Alright, buckle up, everyone! Today, we’re diving into the dark and moody world of Ergo Proxy, a sci-fi noir anime that proves not every dystopian story has to be all guns and explosions. Instead, this 2006 gem carves its own path with heavy existential themes, a grim atmosphere, and a visual style that holds up shockingly well for its age.

Set in the domed city of Romdo, humanity is hanging on by a thread after a global ecological disaster. Here, humans coexist with androids called AutoReivs, but the catch is, that some of these androids are infected with the Cogito virus. This strange illness makes them self-aware and, well, causes a lot of issues for the average Joe.

The Dark Story

Our story follows Re-L Mayer, a sharp-tongued investigator, as she uncovers the truth about mysterious, primordial-like beings called Proxies and how they’re tied to the survival of humanity.

Let’s talk about why this show is dripping with noir anime vibes. From its shadowy streets to its sterile, oppressive government complexes, Ergo Proxy doesn’t just hint at its bleakness; it bathes in it. It’s just all up in that monotone vibe that I absolutely jell with. This isn’t your high-energy, action-packed dystopia.

It’s a slow-burn descent into the dark corners of identity, consciousness, and what it means to exist. The monotone simply makes the strange and colorful stand out more. And makes you think there’s more going on here than meets the surface.

The Style

The style? Oh boy, can I tell you about the style! Even though it’s been nearly two decades since its release, the animation still delivers. The muted colors, haunting character designs, and intricate settings are as striking today as they were in 2006. Sure, the pacing can be a little slow, especially if you’re used to modern, snappier storytelling, but the payoff is worth it.

In all honesty, the music and the camera angles along with the amazing visuals remind me of Bleach. I have no idea why they do it just feels like something that comes right out of the Big Three spot.

It also feels a lot like Cyberpunk anime, if Cyberpunk was created in the early 2000s you know? It has this vibe of, it a utopia, you know it’s a utopia. But it feels far too good to be true and then you see it for what it is. A living hell.

My Final Thoughts

Ergo Proxy anime

Ergo Proxy is the kind of anime that stays with you long after the credits roll. If you’re a fan of plots that make you think, noir anime aesthetics, and question your very existence, then congratulations! You’ve found your next obsession. Now if you’ll excuse me I’m going to go see what Re-L is getting up to!
