JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: The Fun In Being Dumb
JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure aired in October 2012 and was developed by Studio David Production. It was adapted from the Manga of the same name created by Hirohiko Araki. The story follows the tale between a 19th-century boy named Jonathan Joestar and his adoptive brother Dio Brando. Jonathan finds himself tormented by his brother culminating in Dio acquiring a stone mask that turns him into a Vampire. With these abilities, he seeks to rule the world while Jonathan rallies allies to fight against Dio and those he has turned.
I will only be talking about the first arc of this anime because of it’s rather length and complicated story. Also what in the world is this anime!? I love strange shows believe me, I’ve watched many in my years of being an anime connoisseur. But this show? Takes the proverbial cake! The poses and striking combat alone are something else entirely. I’ve seen so many references in my real life from corporate companies that use JoJo references. And a JoJo’s Reference is already counted as a JoJo’s Reference!
If any of that confuses you understand that JoJo’s Bizzare Adventure is one of the very few anime that is complete and utter rubbish, but it’s rubbish done right. Indeed the anime is very weird, some lines are so forced and come out of nowhere. But to watch it then be punctuated with an extreme facial close-up with some of the weirdest poses I have ever witnessed in an anime. It’s inherently stupid. And the writers know this. That’s the genius of this show in my opinion. It knows it’s stupid, it knows its writing and story are terrible and all over the place. So, they throw the pages even further and embrace the crazy weirdness.
I love watching abridged series on YouTube, it’s my favorite pastime as some of these anime can be mocked in such creative ways. And sometimes, in the case of Sword Art Online, an abridges show can highlight a flaw in an anime and give a far better alternative. Essentially fixing an anime. You’ll see me talk about SAO Abridged in one of next week’s posts. The place I’m going with this is that so many of these abridged shows use JoJo’s references. Take for example: Helsing Abridged. In the Abridged show on YouTube, the character in the actual anime pulls a JoJo’s Pose. And in the Abridged he says and I quote: “And yes! This is a JoJo’s Reference!”
The amount of love the internet has for JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure is mind-boggling! It’s phenomenal to see how pop culture has taken one of anime’s most beloved shows and embraced it wholeheartedly.
I remember a time when people within mainstream media where people looked down on anime and anything that encompassed it. If it wasn’t Pokemon then it wasn’t given a second thought. Now seeing how a show like JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure is being given the recognition it deserves despite that from a story standpoint it’s all over the place.
This is what makes me a proud anime fan. I love to see how people who once never considered touching the weird weeb show suddenly gush about a fight scene they saw. Or explain why they like this character more than the others. Or who their favorite Waifu is… Yeah, maybe JoJo’s was a mistake…
Regardless, you can’t deny that JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure has caused massive waves and will forever be the meme dumpster fire it was always meant to be. I can’t wait to see the next shows that use JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure as a jumping point to make their waves on the internet.
