The Journey Into Another World

The Roots of Isekai

Isekai takes its roots in early Japanese folklore and western inspired literature. To start with the basics Isekai translates to “another world” (異世界) and encompasses an anime genre all about adventure, wonder and escapism.

Some of the earliest inspiration for isekai as a genre comes from old Japanese folk lore, an example being the story: “Urashima Tarō” which tells the story of a fisherman who saves a turtle and is taken to an underwater world. However when returning back to his world with him being gone only a little while, centuries have passed.

Some other more western inspirations come from Lewis Carroll’s “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland” (1865), and C.S. Lewis’s “The Chronicles of Narnia” (1950-1956) whose respective stories have had their impact on mainstream western media.

Isekai in it’s most basic form is leaving ones world behind, often into a more rich and or exciting world. There are a few exceptions in this genre where life worsens for the protagonist but those anime will be covered in our reviews.

I will however give you a couple recommendations to start you on your isekai journey! Or you can skip right to our Articles page to browse our list of isekai based articles where we dive deeper and help you to find your next favorite isekai!

The Best of Isekai

One thing that must be understood about Isekai is that it is a very saturated market in anime. What this means is there is a metric ton of isekai anime on the internet right now and not everything is going to be of good quality or good in writing and character. So I’ll give you a personal recommendation for my top picks that everyone can get into. Not only do I find these ones fun and entertaining they are the highest grossing in their genre and have been a staple for high quality isekai for years.

First off lets start with one that has its fair share of popularity in the recent years: In Another World With My Smartphone was one of 2017s biggest hits and follows the story of Touya Mochizuki, a 15 year old boy who finds himself accidentally killed by a clerical error in his world and as penance he is allowed to be reborn in new world with one request. Surprisingly level headed he chooses to bring his smartphone with him, which retains almost all its basic functions such as internet access and GPS while also gaining new mystical and magical abilities. It’s a wonderfully lighthearted anime and introduces you to the earliest and most common tropes in isekai without coming across as forced.

Another anime I can recommend which is widely overlooked is Log Horizon 2013. Being a hidden gem following the release of Sword Art Online, another massive isekai, Log Horizon was widely overlooked but still garnered its fair share of attention. It follows the story of Shiroe and his friends Naotsugu and Akatsuki who become trapped with 30 000 other players in a popular game they play called Elder Tale. We follow the story of perseverence and acceptance from both the players and the ever evolving NPC characters. It’s light hearted with some serious tones here and there while having one of the best opening songs of any anime around, in my opinion of course, while also helping to feel attached to almost every character you meet. Top Recommended Isekai of 2024

In this section I will give my top recommendations for the year which will be reset and rewritten every year for the foreseeable future. This will let you know the best and highest quality we recommend here at Anime Talkz!

Starting us off with a sweet and wholesome choice we have Fluffy Paradise.

Finishing us off is an action packed anime filled with funny moments, awesome power systems and a lighthearted nature to help you laugh and have fun. The Wrong Way to Use Healing Magic is a personal favorite of mine that I recommend for both experienced anime viewers and those just dipping their toes into the world of anime. It’s fun and never takes itself seriously while telling an interesting story that leads into an interesting season two. When it comes out at least.
