The Sweetness in Slice Of Life
The Slice Of Life genre is one of the biggest in all of anime as it encompasses many other genres that fall under its collective umbrella. I’ve seen many times where someone will explain that Slice Of Life is only comprised of romance stories, to which I have to say isn’t entirely true. While it’s true that many Slice Of Life are indeed romance stories there are some outliers.
Take for instance K-On! This extraordinary Slice Of Life anime tells the story of school girls starting a band together in hope of performing at concerts. While one can argue its ties to the love of friendship it isn’t romance in the slightest. But it is still so feel good and captivating that many I’ve spoken to who claim to only watch Shonen have told me their positive experiences with K-On!
Similairly we have Usagi Drop or Bunny Drop. This anime tells the story about a father and illigitimate daughter. If there is romance between the main protagonist and another woman its not the focal point. Anime helps us escape, you’re no doubt here to figure out where best to escape to. But it can be challenging when watching something like Shonen or Isekai. It’s too drastic of a change.
Slice Of Life is familiar, but different enough for you to experience and feel something new. Cheer for a pairing you believe would be so good together, and cry when the main character loses the one they love. That’s the beauty of this genre.
It’s escapism, with the notion you’ll go back to the real world feeling better than you left it.

The Best of Slice Of Life
This section is dedicated to the top picks, in my opinion, of what the best slice of life is. This will encompass romance and non-romantical shows. And to start us off is one of the most visually gorgeous Slice of Life anime that technically also counts as a Shonen.
Call of the Night
Call of the Night follows the story of Kou Yamori, a 14 year old boy who finds himself drained on the monotony of the real world and life in general. To escape this perpetual spiral he finds himself in he sneaks out at night to find himself enjoying the freedom and beauty the darkness holds. Here is where he meets Nazuna Nanakusa a strange woman who invites him to figure out who he wants to be and how he wants to achieve his goals.
Without spoiling too much the story is gorgeous and the setting and art style even more so. The main theme hidden under all the beauty is rather hard hitting. Yamori finds himself unable to grasp his goal because he doesn’t understand the means to achieve it. He fails to understand how to fall in love. In its basic form Call of the Night is a story of showing you how to love someone, how to fall in love and how to cherish that love once you have it.

Top Romance Slice Of Life
Some of my top picks for romance anime obviously delves into the high school drama aspect but one anime I just can’t overlook is Wotakoi: Love is Hard for Otaku. With such a rich atmosphere of workplace romance, without the scandal aspect of it most would assume to come with it, it hits every aspect I look for in the perfect romance anime, lovable characters, understandable and well thought out story beats, and multiple love stories happening at the same time that don’t clash or feel forced to work. It’s amazing writing for an amazing story.
On the opposite side of the spectrum Komi Can’t Communicate is the perfect example of show don’t tell that anime can absolutely nail from time to time. One of the protagonists, Komi, doesn’t speak, and when she does its usually softspoken with odd noises showing she just doesn’t talk much. But her emotions are clear to see with the way she looks at people.
That’s why slice of life can sometimes be better than any action anime when telling a story, writing and art style are elevated over fight choreography and music selection. Find out more in our Article pages!
