Doctor Elise: The Royal Lady with the Lamp was published in January 2024 and was developed by Maho Film Studio. It originated from a web novel created by Yuin. The story follows a woman who had died in her previous life and became a doctor in modern era South Korea. However, after a fatal plane crash, she reawakens in her old body as Elise de Clorance. Now armed with the knowledge of both her old life’s path and the medical field, she tries her best to make life better for those around her, whether helping directly or indirectly.
I really enjoy this show. No duh, of course I do. I’m reviewing it, but I really do like this show. The reason is that regression and reincarnation anime is everywhere these days. But this show and a handful of others have done something different. Double reincarnation. It sounds like the dumbest combination in the world, but funny enough, it works.
Doctor Elise Changes History
Elise finds herself living a new life after dying the first time. She lives as a doctor and helps many people, and yet after she dies again, she’s back in her first life before anything went wrong. Now, armed with that knowledge, she is able to make the proper decisions. Understanding her mistakes, she pushes forward with all the right answers this time.
Not only is she changing history, but she’s making life better for everyone around her while doing so. She chooses to be a doctor in this life as well because it’s her true passion to help people. Having a cousin who is in the medical field, I hear the occasional story, and for me, I can never see myself doing something like that.
I feel those in the medical field are leagues above in terms of skill and willpower. Hearing the length of some of these surgeries is insane to me. To see a girl choose that same life after knowing what it entails shows her absolute dedication to helping people.
The Doctor’s Gentle Beauty
She is also a gentle soul, which contrasts with her first life. She was more of a selfish tyrant, but after her second life, she understands the value in people and how to care for them. This show helps you root for her fixing her old life and helping the people around her. We also want to root for her and the main love interest. Because she loves him, but in her old life, he explained their marriage as an agreement and nothing more.
We want to see her succeed and become the empress as well as a doctor, and I feel this is where the show is taking it. She has shown her value as an empress as well as a doctor. So, a compromise must be made in this regard. And I feel that is where the show will really take off.
Sweet and Simple
Doctor Elise has insane potential to show a fun political world as well as a medical one. I think as it goes on, there should be conflicts of interest as it would further enhance the show.
I’m not going to sit around and say Doctor Elise is the best medical show in anime, nor does it play out like anime Grey’s Anatomy. Thank heavens for that. I will simply say that this show has a wonderful and special flare to it that you rarely see in Isekai anime anymore. It’s grounded, well-researched, and beautifully animated. It’s honestly a shame that it hasn’t gotten more recognition than it currently has. It truly is a pity to me.
